What's a good price to pay for a first generation 4-door Charger R/T?

Kinja'd!!!

I want an american RWD sedan in my life, and the Charger gives me that while also looking bad ass.

I'll be getting a job over the summer and want to know how much I should pay for one. Base-model R/T is what I'd be going for most likely.

Or if you have a better idea for a car, that works too.

What about a used police one? I assume those have some performance upgrades. All you need to do is add an R/T stripe.

$10-15k depending on year, miles, condition and how good of a dickerer you are.

Probably around $9,000ish, if you go from the private market. But its all gonna depend on how many are for sale in your area. Careful though, it my 5 min search for these things I saw at least a dozen rebuilt and salvage titles on these guys.

I never thought about old police cars.. The ones by me are silver and have nice alloy rims too...

I was expecting higher than that actually. Awesome!

I'd definitely be really careful about the state of the title on these cars in particular.

I agree with another poster that it would be worth 10-15k, in great condition, and lower miles (under, I would say 90k miles). However, I own a 2007 Chrysler 300, these first gen LX bodies tend to have their share of problems, if you can afford it, I would try to spring for the next gen Charger, like a 2011. If you like the LX platform, try looking at the 300 C's. They don't seem to be hooned as much as the Chargers, and they have the exact same engine.

What's made you want one of these?

I've liked the charger for a while, and I like how the first generation looks better than the second generation.

Plus it's a big sedan with a V8 under the hood, what's not to like?

300s don't seem to hold their value as well as Chargers either. And there's a lot more of them for sale around me.

I used to work for a city in Ohio that had Chargers and they all had the V6. The money saved vs. the V8 was significant and they had no highway duties. However, the V6 was surprisingly adequate, IMHO.

Well, you can spend a few grand more and get the SRT8 version. That's what I'd do, especially since you thought the RT would be going for more. You'll probably pay mid to high teens for a good sixth gen (not first gen!) Charger SRT8 from a private party.

Less than 18k for something that looks that good and has that much power. Mmmm.

I said first generation 4-door! I didn't know what generation it actually was.

Yeah, that's a car I'd consider taking a closer look at. Almost 100k miles but it appears clean and well taken care of, and you'll have the SRT instead of the standard RT. That's a lot of power for the money.

My only concern would be insurance. How much is it going to cost for an under 25 male to drive what's considered a "high performance vehicle" It would probably end up costing more than the payments made on the car.

Get some insurance quotes before you buy, but the RT isn't exactly a slow car. Insurance from one V8 sedan to another shouldn't be too different.

The next-gen LX Chargers have issues too, or at least mine does. My arthritic dashboard and crappy seats being the primary problems.

Don't get me wrong, though. Although I was considering trading it in early this year, I do love my car. I just don't like it when it complains about the rain moving in.

Quotes will definitely be had from every insurance agency in the city. Hopefully I can find one that won't cost an arm AND a leg. It won't work if I can't make both the insurance and car payments.

Well yes, total cost of ownership should factor into your decision about whether or not you can afford a car. I hope you can make it work.

Yeah, it's mainly because there are so damn many of them. I mean, you looked at challengers as well? You can get them with 6 speeds

Yeah they do still seem to have problems, but they are slowly weeding them out. What trim do you have?
